Learning Route: Linking smallholder to commercialization pratices: the case of Farmers Organizations in the Kenyan dairy sector

unnamed

8-15 of October 2017

Farmers organizations (FOs) are key contributors to achieving the goals and improving the livelihoods of poor rural people, reducing poverty and attaining food security. Through the services they offer their members, they can provide assistance in improving smallholders’ production and incomes.
Evidence demonstrate their potential to link smallholders to markets, accelerate the adoption of technologies and inputs and encourage the sustainable management of land, water and other natural resources. In Africa, FOs are becoming increasingly relevant stakeholders able to provide support to small producers, contribute to their livelihood and link them to the market.

PROCASUR and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) are pleased to announce a Learning Initiative (LI) on Farmers Organizations in the Kenyan Dairy sector. It is developed under the Large Regional IFAD-Procasur Grant Programme "Strengthening capacities and tools for scaling-up and disseminating innovations (2016 - 2018)". This topic was selected resting on the consolidated results of the (i) online survey lunched by PROCASUR in April 2016 in the ESA region, (ii) in depth interviews to project managers of IFAD funded projects in the ESA region, and (iii) experts’ consultation undertaken among specialists in the area of Farmers Organizations.
The Learning Route "Linking smallholders to commercialization practices: the case of Farmers Organizations in the Kenyan dairy sector" will take place in Kenya from the 8 - 15 of October 2017.

This initiative will expose participants from different IFAD projects and partner institutions with a range of innovative mechanisms and learning activities organized directly on field through the pooling and sharing of knowledge. Innovative local initiatives will give participants the opportunity to analyze and to learn about innovative tools and practices developed by different actors on Farmers Organizations directly from the local champions in the host experiences and with the support of thematic experts all along the Route. Furthermore, thematic panels of experts and workshops will be organized in collaboration with the East African Farmers Federation (EAFF)
